On your computer, open Gmail. In the top right, click Settings See all settings. Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab. In the 'IMAP access' section, select Enable IMAP. Click Save Changes. Open Settings Accounts Email & app accounts. Click Add an account Google. Note: If your email client doesn't have a Google option, see Read Gmail messages on other email clients using IMAP for.
For many Mac users the setup of any email account is pretty easy, but with our steps, tips, and tricks you can get the most out of your Google Apps or Gmail account. Before you begin make sure you enable IMAP (or POP but not recommended) in your account.
You can set up your Apple Mail, iCal, and Address Book to automatically synchronize with a Gmail or Google Apps account. (I’ll cover the best way to do it on an iOS device in a future post.) Mail: Log on to your Gmail account (or Google Apps account, which I will refer to generically as Gmail from here on out). Change Outgoing server settings in Mail on Mac. You can change preferences for the SMTP mail server you use to send messages, as directed by the provider of your email accounts. To change these preferences in the Mail app on your Mac, choose Mail Preferences, click Accounts, click Server Settings, click the outgoing Account pop-up menu, then choose Edit SMTP Server List. Google account was initially synced with Mac mail app then suddenly stopped getting new mail from that google account. I deleted the google account from my Mac and tried to sign back on for the past month continuing to get the message 'authentication failed: Failed to authenticate with Google, please try again later.'

This settings are a matter of debate and this is our opinion of optimal settings for those still running prior to 10.9 Mavericks which upgrades Mail for a better integration with Gmail. For recommended setting see Google’s Gmail Help Forum.

After everything is said and done always test it out. An easy way to test your settings in any version of Mail is to go to the Window menu and select Connection Doctor. After getting the green light on your settings try customizing the toolbar (View Menu > Customize Toolbar) and using drag and drop to organize your folders (you may need to show/hide the sidebar).
